New social workers are usually wide-eyed and full of vigor when they finally get a chance to serve the community. They believe that their good intentions and unconditional love for the people who are suffering will benefit the field. Even though this is true to some extent, it does not always hold and that is why many new social workers are at risk of mental health issues due to unmet expectations.
Providers of social services need to understand the belief that everyone who comes to their door looking for help will get satisfied is a fantasy which needs to be dropped before going any further. Also, they need to know not everyone will be delighted or thankful for the help accorded no wonder the length the social worker goes to accord the help.
The providers of social services need also to understand that it will be very likely that personal issues of their clients will rub into their lifestyle too. Therefore, personal therapy is highly recommended as well as keeping a journal to record feelings for better processing. Social work is rarely a 9-5 pm job because you may have to help people in distress during weird hours. However, it is good to know when you are pushing yourself too hard and need a break.
